About Time...

April 21, 2004

Though I know that we meet every night,
And we couldn't have changed since the last time,
To my joy and delight
It's a new kind of love at first sight.

Though it's you and it's I all the time,
Every meeting's a marvelous pastime,
You're increasingly sweet,
So whenever we happen to meet,

I greet you with a song in my heart...

---

Yes. It's about time I wrote a lil bit for the sake of documenting my life and keeping this guy alive. This comes after an evening of mint choc chip ice cream and a thoroughly captivating episode of The O.C. Thanks go out to Vanessa and Mr Josephson Junior respectively for the inspiration.

So I found out today that English is not the official language of the US. There is no official language. How bout that.

Callaway and I were just discussing the fact that it's been 4 years since junior year at our beloved Pallotti. How bout that. I'll save thinking about that for a long reflective post. ha. June? I will say that I am extremely proud of Brenton, Callaway, and myself for staying in touch all these years. Not only staying in touch as in knowing what we're doing for the summer, but really staying in touch. Chattin it up on the IM, keepin tabs on our families, friends, and relationships, even the occasional telephone call(!), always making an effort to hang out when we're all in town, and even visiting each other at the respective schools. In short, we are awesome. Given our awesomeness thus far, I have no doubts concerning the future of our friendship :D

Quick update on the summer situation: I'll be chillin in Boston yet again, keepin the same room at Random THANK GOD haha. The pain in the ass that is moving my entire room from state to state is unimaginable. Recently got a job with Birkhauser Boston (10$/hr, solid ha), a publishing company that specializes in scientific/technical/medical texts. I've been having a hard time explaining to others what my job functions will be, but I understood it perfectly during the interview. I'll be dealing with their GERMAN database... ya. Ann Kostant, Executive Editor in the Mathematical Sciences dept, explained that she wants me to learn all there is to know about publishing. Not bad. The oddest thing: it seemed like she had already hired me for the summer AND the fall. Don't know how likely it is that I'll be working for them in the fall too, even if it is part-time -- honestly I'd rather take cool classes and dance my ass off. This decision was based on my resume alone. I emailed her my resume, a cover letter, and writing samples, but the latter two were somehow botched in the process. So weird... The office is located in CENTRAL SQUARE. For the non-Boston crew that's like 10mins from my room. My oh my. One of my writing professors, Ed Barrett, once said that happiness is walking to work...

---
What Summer Proposes Is Simply Happiness

careful octaves shatter a sentimental piano
breaking waves find his feet

leaves spread innocent gossip
neighbors converge for dusk

the mathematician discovers she can cook
the married couple remembers to make out in the back seat

happiness is walking to work
happiness is waking to a quiet house

happiness is 5 or 8 children
happiness is by the open window naked next to you.

---

I have no doubt the proximity of the office will only add to my happiness in the hot summer months. Today I interviewed to be a summer RA at Random. I think it went very well. Both women interviewing me were very friendly and receptive. (I think I caught the younger one glancing at my chest. Then again, perhaps I am just more sensitive to this sort of thing. Funny... on the way to the interview, I was imagining that I would have a male interviewer who would make an indecent sexual comment and getting really riled up, haha.) This means that I would be the person to go to in times of both crisis and non-crisis. Also I'd be in charge of making people be social. For the pleasure of having fun, I would get free housing and $500 on top of that. In conclusion, I would totally be Mr Jack's sugar mama, quite the exciting prospect....

---
Bought you a fur coat for Christmas, a diamond ring,
A big Cadillac car and everything,
What makes me treat you the way that I do?
Gee, baby, ain't I good to you?

---

April has been a particularly insane month here, for many reasons. The first week was snow, the second was rain, and in the third, summer arrived. I had my air conditioner on this afternoon. That's just weird. Additionally, I got tonsillitis (exciting!). I feel obliged to go into this in more detail.

Sometime last weekend, after the excitement of the Class of 2005 formal at the Top of the Hub (fotos), an uncomfortable globular creature developed in my throat. At first, I thought it would die quickly. Then it did not, and things got worse. Sunday night, I was working on some mathematics with my dear friend Katie Olsen. After about 10mins of sitting and staring into space, I sat up and said, "I think I need to go home, take some drugs, and sleep." Monday night I finally hauled my tuckus to the Med Center where they stole my blood and particles living on my throat. Skipped class Tuesday. Wednesday called the Med Center to find out I didn't have pharyngitis, mono, or strep and asked the nurse, "So, what do I do now?" She recommend painkillers, so Peter (my GRT) and Jack invested in some Motrin, while I stocked up on Tylenol and Ibuprofen. Sometime on Thursday around 4 in the AM, I decided that this tonsil business was getting out of control, called up Mr Jack, and we hiked our tuckii to Med Center. The overnight emergency doctor boy examined me and concluded that for sure it was either pharyngitis of tonsillitis. I said great, now what? He made an appointment for me with a real doctor for a reasonable hour in the morning. I said great, can you give me something for the pain? It took some convincing but eventually he injected my upper rear with an anti-inflammatory substance (described as a better Motrin) that lasted for half the day, a relief I would miss later. Man that stuff was good. (Weird though -- it made something that I think is my liver hurt. Same area of the body hurt later when I took Motrin.) He hooked me up with a cot and a dark room, and Mr Jack stayed the remainder of the night with me. In the morn, I saw said real doctor. He told me to say ahhh, peeked into my throat for a good 2seconds, and said, "Well, you've got tonsillitis." Doctors that know their shit are so impressive. Sent me home with mad antibiotics and a suggestion to load up on painkillers. In my time as a tonsillitis victim, I have learned that popsicles and ice cream are far more effective than over-the-counter medicines. AND WATER. I cannot believe what a difference it made when I was constantly imbibing. The big plan is to skip classes through the rest of this week in an effort to conserve strength and actually get some work done.

Good things: I talked with one of the Counseling Deans on Thursday, and she said it would be no problem to grant me an OX at the end of term. For the non-mit folk, my experience with the counseling deans has been limited to getting a couple OX's when I got sick at the end of last term. I know in the link it says that an OX is an excuse from a final exam, but for me it was more of a delay in finishing the class, whether it had a final or not. I just got more time to finish all my stuff. This year, no finals. I managed that through careful selection of classes (haha hoo) and luck: two of my classes are maths, but no finals. Delicioso. Ooo, what am I taking this term:

-- 15.301 Managerial Psychology -- Why this one come to mind first, I don't know. Maybe because I get to spend it with Kurt (my local provider of The O.C.) and 2 of his DKE brothers. Taking it to full the mit lab requirement. Lab = handing out surveys.
-- 18.354 Nonlinear Dynamics TWO: Continuum Mechanics -- The stress tensOR class I take with a group of lovely ladies. We've stuck together through several wonderful applied math courses here at mit. Exciting.
-- 18.313 Seminar in Discrete Math -- Taught by Dan Kleitman, a man I always describe as a jolly old Jewish Santa Claus. I had him last year for 18.310 Principles Applied Math I. What a horrible class haha. When Ann Kostant, my interviewer/boss at Birkhauser Boston asked me about my math professors, I mentioned Kleitman, and she said, "Oh Danny..." Not in a swoon way, but in a "oh I always edit his papers" way. ha.
-- 21W.755 Writing and Reading Short Stories -- Taught by Stephen Alter, a taller+thinner version of Mark Twain, a southern gentleman who grew up in India. Good class, awesome group of people. Once my stories are revised, maybe I'll post them.
-- 21F.703 Espanol TRES -- It's spanish again with some of the same crew from Espanol DOS. Good times, lotsa learnin, lotsa excellent movies including "Juana la Loca" and "El Espinazo del Diablo." For our video project, this girl Jen Fische and I went into Chinatown and filmed our Dim Sum meal. It was thoroughly exciting.

It's a little disturbing, but not all that surprising, that I've been really sick near the end of the semester for two consecutive terms... It's been a hard year.

On the DanceTroupe front, this tonsillitis thing is really kicking me in the assmar. We had Second Showings (our second massive dress rehearsal of the semester) on Sunday, and it nearly killed me to have to watch everyone dance without being able to dance myself. Cuerpo, you better get better. This semester I'm in 4 dances and choreographing 1. The 4 are as follows: (choreographer - style - music)

-- Vanessa and Will -- hiphop -- "Take It To the Floor" by B2K, "I'm Really Really Hot" by Missy Elliott, "It Takes Two" remix by Fatman Scoop
-- Michelle -- hiphop -- "Drop" by Timbaland, Fatman Scoop,
-- Paul -- hiphop --
-- Jess -- jazz -- Insatiable

The one I'm choreographing is an homage (hoo), if you will (hoohoo), to Strongbad of Homestarrunnner. If you're curious, come to the show May 7,8,9. If you're curious, and you won't be in Boston, I'll show you the DVD version. We're in the final weeks of DanceTroupe -- the DT Madness known as Prod Week, when we live in the theater, is about to begin. I feel it will be a spectacular concert. Exciting!

I always say "tensor" as "ten-sore," not as "tenser." This comes from a math class I'm taking now taught by a smarmy young Italian who dresses better than most professors and teaches us about stress tensors. It never occurred to me that "tensOR" is just like... "inspectOR" or.... I was going to say "spectOR" but that's "specter" haha. hoooo. "SectOR?" Took me a while to find those, ha. Out of all my professors, he's wins asshole of the semester for not understanding that a tonsil exploding out the right side of my throat would cause me to place his precious midterm exam in my purple folder and keep it there until I could stay awake for a couple hours with feeling nauseous. Asshooooole.

A snippet...

---
InjryPron1: u were talking to me about how fascinating it was that english was convoluted and contradictory in its rules
InjryPron1: and it was the biggest news to u
nia5nia: hey
nia5nia: it was a slow day
nia5nia: ha
nia5nia: :-[
InjryPron1: u should be ashamed
nia5nia: dude i just gave you the ashamed face
nia5nia: cant you tell

---

I still can't remember the words in particular that fascinated me. As Brenton would say, BAT...

When I'm bored, I browse through Jack's roomie's site, Riad's site of photos (esp this one, cooool), or update my blog. ha.

I think that's it for now. Might update in the midst of the DT Madness, we'll see. Hope all's good for errrrrrbody.

But I always knew
