December 18, 2005It's been an uneven couple of days. By that, I mean that every day has had a different feel or flow to it.Thursday night was all about celebrating the end of exams with drinking and debauchery and watching the holiday episode of the OC. Friday was spent in a tired daze of recuperation and eating, sending friends off on their travels, and watching The Anniversary Party on my laptop while propped up against a pillow in my bed. Saturday was slow, plodding along until my parents and I made it to the annual winter performance of a fabulous dance company. Today (Sunday) has been an exhausted rush of buying birthday gifts for my mother and decorating the tree, followed by a relaxing dinner of Chinese food to celebrate my mother's birthday which is today today (Monday). Photos to come. Saturday night was funny and enjoyable. I saw the most ghastly tutu I have ever seen in my life: a beautiful white base with awful transparent blue and brown feather-like sashes radiating from the center of the skirt. I also saw the best thing since Rasta Thomas on stage: Mathias Dingman. After the performance, everyone was mingling, stuffing themselves with shrimp, and downing glasses of champagne. Suddenly, Mathias was at arm's length, and I had to gush. me: I really enjoyed watching you dance. he: Thank you. my father: (who, of course, knows Mathias) This is my daughter. he: Ohhh... my father: Well you know, she took classes here when she was younger. he: Oh I see. me: (daaaad stop embarrassing me!! how can you tell this beautiful manboy who is just the best dancer ever about my meager months spent at such a great school where my closest contact with the professional dancing world was limited to preparatory classes for amateurs!!) he: (extends his hand) I'm Mathias. Now here is where I lost all control over my motor skills. In a normal world, where I am a relatively normal person, the conversation would proceed like so. he: (extends his hand) I'm Mathias. me: (shakes hand) I'm Anna. That would be the bare minimum of a relatively normal conversation. If we were feeling particularly charming that night, we might continue on. he: (extends his hand) I'm Mathias. me: (shakes hand) I'm Anna. I really enjoyed your performance! I always look forward the modern pieces in these concerts. I felt that, unlike some of the other dancers, you had a fluidity about your motions. On stage, you look very comfortable and confident, and it's refreshing to see someone enjoy himself on stage. Any of those alternatives would have been fabulous. Even the first option of minimal name exchange would have been fabulous compared what actually transpired. he: (extends his hand) I'm Mathias. me: (shakes hand, smiles) me: ... me: ... me: (looks at the floor) me: ... me: (more silence) I can't even remember the last time any boy rendered me speechless... but one who is sixteen? (Ok so we're not sure about the age, but this is a good approximation.) One day, Mathias will google himself and it will lead him to this blog where he will read all about how he made one fan speechless, and his rightfully earned ego will swell. An ego rightfully earned because, as we will review below, he is the new hotness. September 2005: Mathias wins 1st prize, Junior men division, at the 2nd Seoul International Dance Competition. June 2005: Mathias was been awarded the Bronze Medal, diploma, and title of Laureate, at the 2005 Moscow Ballet Competition. June 2005: Mathias places third in the junior men's category at the International Ballet Competition in Helsinki, Finland. April 2004: Mathias wins 2nd place in the men's Senior Division and placed among the top 12 male dancers of the competition in the Youth America Grand Prix competition in New York City. April 2004: Mathias wins First Prize and is awarded the Nijinsky Award by an independent committee at the Fifth OTR Austrian Dance Committee Contest in Vienna. I think I've made my point. Mathias Dingman, my dancer's heart is yours. To share with Rasta of course... but half ain't bad! [Note: Rumor has it that Rasta is starring in Movin' Out, only the musical I've been dying to see for YEARS now. Lucky me: it's coming to Baltimore in the spring!! Also: Nick Lazarrini, winner of So You Think You Can Dance, named Rasta as one of his idols. ] Few things could be better than lounging on the couch, basking in the glow of the Christmas tree, writing about my favorite dancers. December is the best :D |
