15 years ago, my family arrived in the US. We spent a night in the New York apartment of my great aunt, Tyetya Fanya, and started the rest of our lives in an apartment in Baltimore the next day.
Tonight, while Slav was away celebrating an anniversary of his own (10 years as Danny's friend, on Sept 1), mother, father, and I watched some old home videos to commemorate the date. Highlights included a bathtub scene where Slav called the bath foam "bubble gum," my mother's fabulous old hairdo, my father's awkward descent into the neighborhood pool, and my obvious desire to be a third parent to Slav by chiding and encouraging him in a Russian storytelling voice.
We also watched the videos of fathers carrying their dead children out of the Russian school that was being held hostage, and mothers lifting bloody sheets covering corpses in search for the bodies of their sons and daughters.
For many reasons, I am so happy and so grateful to be here.
