July 7, 2004The last few weeks have been jam-packed with all kinds of fun things. There has been much traveling. Slav went to the beach for a week with Danny&family, Mother spent a week in California celebrating her father's 90th birthday, Nikka is still relaxing in Moscow with her grandparents, Erin and Vanessa are both frolicking in Spain, Michelle is hitting up the Orient, a nice fellow has visited my home twice since the end of school. And I am at home :D And being at home is allowing me to recover from a THIRD bout of tonsillitis. That is right -- THIRD. About a week ago, Dr. Tatar said my right tonsil had "gone juggernaut." In about a week's time, Dr. Tatar will be ripping that tonsil (and the other one) out. My tonsil has ruined my plans for the last time. Academic plans, DT plans, work plans, summer fun plans... But no more! I will have my revenge soon... When Tatar GOUGES it (and the other one) out of my throat. I wonder if they let you take it home. Currently I'm on Augmentin, "the first FDA-approved antibiotic for both bacterial sinusitis and community-acquired pneumonia due to S. pneumoniae with penicillin MICs=2 µg/mL and a ß-lactamase–producing pathogen!" Augmentin provides me with clavulanate potassium and amoxicillin, an antibiotic I thought I was allergic to. Turns out, it is Slav who is allergic to amoxicillin. How I mixed it up is beyond me. I also have a bottle of Hycet, a strong pain reliever that will carry me through the pain of having a piece of my body removed. Tatar's orders are to try out the Hycet before the surgery, just in case it does something wild to me. I'm planning on taking two teaspoons tonight after dinner. As my father put it, "You'll have a nice night of sleep." Or it will be a night of heaving. We will see. I've been teaching a couple kids (piano, math, "reading comprehension") for some weeks now. It's mostly for the extra cash, but I'm finding that when I wake up, it's nice to have something I must do instead of an endless expanse of a summer day. Besides the money, I am getting an idea of what my parents go through as piano teachers. It's fantastic when the kid gets it, and you get the kid, and the two of you talk on one level. When the child is so lost or unwilling that it's gut-wrenching to make a connection between the two brains, all fun is lost. In the end, it will be "a good experience." And cash. I've made some progress on the thesis that involved researching Soviet Army medals -- good times. I hope to get a bit more done before I am sidelined by surgery. And that grad school thing... As I come closer to my last year at MIT (oh boy oh boy), relatives and family friends begin to ask with increasing curiosity and urgency, "So, what's the plan?" My latest brilliant idea for the future: law school. That is right friends. Law. I currently have about 10 applications to schools in the Northeast corner of the country sitting by my bedside. Luckily, most ask for a general personal statement, and only one school requires me to explain why I chose that school. For the main essay, I'm thinking about using the idea of growing up to the stories of my father being persecuted back in the day. Maybe I'll throw in a little "I'm a writing major at MIT" bit, just for fun. I'm also getting into an LSAT practice book from Princeton Review. Man. It's a good thing I took a look at some practice materials before the real thang haha. That could have been disastrous. The law school idea is not a sure thing yet. (Not until I get in, ha.) I've got to talk with some people I know and some I don't to get an idea of what's out there for me. As for very recent things... My 4th was awesome -- dinner at the Harbicks is always a wonderful way to spend the evening, especially a special one. Spiderman 2 was awesome -- the fight scenes between Spidery and Doc Ock really did it for me. Fahrenheit 9/11 was something -- the movie has inspired rabid discussion among Slav&Co. I'm impressed by the discourse between the youngns. The only political discussion I remember from my high school days involved Alice trying to defend Bill Clinton from one side of the lunch table, and Jackie laughing her from the other. Erin has always been very vocal about her political feelings -- to this day she's one of the few friends that talks politics with me. I realized only recently that the people who most often share their political view with me (Slav, Father, Erin, Mr Jack) are all conservative. Of course, I do get a nice dose of liberal thought whenever we have dinner with the Harbicks. Vanessa and I have talked about women's reproductive issues before. But I wonder if my imbalanced exposure to the conservative wing influences my views more than I'd like it to. Eh -- just gotta keep reading The Baltimore Sun ;) The weather is usually wonderful, and on sunny days the pool is fantastic. Now, dinner and a viewing of The Red Shoes, one of the highest grossing British films ever, a glorious Technicolor epic for ballet-lovers of all ages. Oh boy oh boy oh boy... |
