December 6, 2004I have been reading so many blog entries lately about atrocious American middle class consumerism and the sad, sad state of current affairs in this country. I know some people who spend an average of 1 out of ever 5 seconds of their day being grateful for the chance to live here.No one's saying this country is perfect, but they've seen some of the alternatives... ...and are quite satisfied with spending the rest of their lives in Maryland where there are at least five kinds of peanut butter on the peanut butter shelf of every supermarket. If you ever want a firsthand account of life without five kinds of peanut butter (among other things), have I got a phone number for you to call. More on this later. Off to Harvard classes for the first time in a week. The goal: no unintenional release of bodily fluids. Alright. Hot. *** And in despair I bowed my head "There is no peace on earth," I said, "For hate is strong and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men." Then pealed the bells more loud and deep: "God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail With peace on earth, good will to men." (words by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) |
