January 17, 2005I love Disney movies. When I grow up, I want to have a nice collection of my favorites. I especially enjoy the ones made round the 90's like The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, but I also like some of the older classics like Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, the Sword in the Stone.A couple days ago, I was listening to the Disney songs on my computer, and a song from Anastasia came on: "Once Upon a December." The movie takes on the legend surrounding Anastasia, one of the Romanov daughters, the Russian royal family. Rumors has it that while the rest of the family was killed, Anastasia survived. Over the years, women have come forward claiming to be Anastasia, but no luck in the finding the real one yet. The heroine in the movie is Anya, a poor Russian girl who (as we later find out) is the missing Romanov daughter. Two misfits, who don't know her real identity, want to pass her off as Anastasia, so they bring her to the palace. I think she sings "Once Upon a December" when walking through the Alexander Palace. As she walks through a great hall, she sees beautifully dressed figures waltzing abover her head. The idea is that memories she can't place are suddenly reappearing. A brief clip from this part of the movie is here. This movie doesn't pop out at me as one of my favorites, but I love this song. The lyrics are quite lovely -- they complement the instrumentals and weave in the story as well. Once Upon a December Music: Stephen Flaherty Lyrics: Lynn Ahrens Dancing bears, Painted wings, Things I almost remember, And a song someone sings Once upon a December... Someone holds me safe and warm. Horses prance through a silver storm. Figures dancing gracefully Across my memory... Far away, long ago, Glowing dim as an ember, Things my heart Used to know, Things it yearns to remember... And a song Someone sings Once upon a December... |
