May 23, 2004Tonight we go on a little cruise on the Potomac sponsored by my father's employer: The Universal Ballet Academy. In the years I have known the academy, it has gone through tremendous changes. First, it was known as the Universal Ballet Academy. Then, it was known as the Kirov Ballet Academy. And now, it is known as the Universal Ballet Academy once more. A history truly wrought with drama and intrigue.Apparently the cruise will serve as a prom for the students of the Academy and as a mingling time for the faculty, staff, and their families. Tonight I will be in the presence of dancers capable of the kind of psychosis captured in the following photos. This first photo comes from Monologue from the Legend of Love. It's a fantastic solo piece, rather creepy, very dark. It's a staple piece in the Academy repertoire. Every time I've watched it, the soloist has been an exceptionally long-limbed young woman. The piece is an excerpt from Grigorovich's contemporary ballet to Melikov's score about a queen who regrets forsaking her beauty to save her dying sister when they both fall in love with the beautiful artist Ferkand. Variation from La Fille Mal Garde Bell Dance from The Fountain of Bakhchisarai Trio from Little Humpbacked Horse I've always been envious of and amazed by the kind of height male dancers achieve. |
