July 6, 2005At my summer company, we play softball every week... except this week.me: there was no softball game today Slav: certainly depends on who you're talking about Slav: oh, why? me: fields were too wet/muddy me: it was depressing Slav: I see me: so i wrote a lament Slav: :-( Slav: haha Slav: a lament! Slav: nice Softball Lament On a typical Wednesday at old TRP, The air was abuzz, we were ready to flee, The afternoon held the promise of fun, A promise of laughter and joy to each one, For you see this was really no typical day, This day was for softball, for serious play. Our team shirts were ready, the gloves lay in wait, The bases impatient, the bats feeling great, The weather was fine, and our spirits were high, Looking forward to running around without ties, And even LeSales would eventually agree To put on those sneakers; feet were meant to run free. Today was to be Renata's debut, She would be fabulous, that much we knew. Clare had been furiously writing all day, She would be anxious to get out of the fray. Lisa was ready to show us her skills, Not with numchucks nor ligers but ball and bat thrills. As we worked on our tasks and bided our time, We received awful news that was hardly sublime, The afternoon dream was ripped from our souls, And our poor hearts were left with some huge gaping holes As an email announced what we dreaded and feared: "The game has been cancelled." Our joy disappeared. David and Jen and the rest of the crew Cried out to the gods: "What did we do to you?" Even Steve, who was (hopefully) far and away, Felt, all of a sudden, a painful dismay, Our fate was unjust, the judgment unfair, The day was destroyed, not a hope in the air. But before we are through, I'll say just this to you: Cherish dearly those games that don't go askew. We await the return of sunnier days That will leave all the sand nice and dry for our plays, And we hope that in time our great pain will subside, Be replaced with irrepressible joy from inside. |
