August 1, 2005Friday was my last day at Big Mutual Investing Firm. We went out to lunch at SunMoon&Stars Cafe (on the firm, no less). The crew gave me a bouquet of yellow flowers and a fabulous black leather portfolio with the company logo (in black) on the front. The gift was my mentor's choice. With the black on black design, she proved she's gotten to know me pretty well over the summer :) With the gift I got a card that everyone had signed, but I didn't want to read it at the office. When 5 o'clock rolled around, I dilly-dallied around the office. I walked around the office giving card to a bunch of my co-workers in exchange for a photograph with each of them, took down the postcards that had adorned my wall, chatted in the hall with some of my lady co-workers. In the tradition of the Softball Lament, I wrote another poem, this time as a farewell to the group.*** My summer here began weeks ago, I could not suspect all that I’d undergo. Under the wing of our dear fair-haired Clare, I produced lots of copy about subjects so rare. A poem for a Ghanean man from downstairs As old as my grandfather (not that he cared). ADP’s HCE’s overwhelmed by the facts Of percentages, rollovers… left me starving for snacks. Watermelon and cherries and green grapes galore, Bagel days, mid-day snacks, never ever a bore. Lunch at SunMoon&Stars, how delicious it was, Lovely cakes dressed in chocolate, second slice just because. Of course there is softball, how could I forget, 1st base slides, bloody knees, neither one I regret. Just because he requested, something something for Dan, Something something so clever something something for Dan. My final words of parting to you: Give hip-hop a chance, see you soon, and thank you… *** When I felt the time had come, I left the building, got into my car, and opened the card. Some had written funny notes, some were sincere... It was wonderful. I've had a such a great time with all the people at the office this summer... I feel so lucky to have spent the precious summer months before law school with such awesome, fun people. I hope to keep in touch with some of the people. The Baltimore office is only a couple blocks from the law school, so I'm foreseeing lunches in the city :) Now that the job is done with, I can get started on my three-part Last Hurrah. Tomorrow I hop on a bus to New York. From there it's dinner with Michelle tomorrow night, a matinee showing ofGlengarry Glen Ross at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theater on Wednesday, dinner with Kurt in Hoboken, and, of course, sleepover in Vanessa's orange room that night. Thursday morning I hop on an early bus back home. I nearly did not go because most of the people I'm coming to see are leaving New York for the weekend, but making the trip earlier in the week and, with Beer's advice, buying tickets for a play makes it totally worthwhile. The second part of the Hurrah is a week in the Outer Banks with my family, and I'll close the season with a third trip to New York on the 20th to celebrate Vanessa's birthday at the one and only Lemon Lounge. School starts soon. First day of class is August 22nd. I got my schedule a couple weeks ago; it is fantastic. M 1-3 Torts T 9-11 Contracts 11-12 Criminal W 9-11 Intro to Civil Procedure 11-12 Criminal R 9-11 Legal Analysis Research & Writing 11-12 Criminal 1-3 Torts F 9-10 Legal Analysis Research & Writing 10-12 Contracts I love school! Thursday is a long day, but Monday starts at 1pm, which means that Sunday is officially part of the weekend. I like the 9am starting times for the rest of the week -- gives me some regularity to get attached to. I just bought a couple "In a Nutshell" books off ebay. The Nutshell series is a collection of brief overviews of various topics/fields, like Java in a Nutshell or, in my case, Torts in a Nutshell. Hopefully I'll be able to skim right through them before classes start. Even if it's all a big law terminology blur, at least I'll start to get familiar with the language. Here's to another great New York trip. |
